RiZE is a small town at the foothills of the northeastern part of Turkey. It enjoys a status of being the capital of the Rize Province.


Geographical Location
Rize is situated on hills surrendering itself down to the sea. Rize is linked with Trabzon by road, which is 41 miles west and with Hopa, which is 55 miles East. The important cities of Rize include Trabzon, Gumushane, Bayburt, Erzurum and Artvin. Rize comprises 32 provinces with lovely bird watching spots. It ranges from an altitude of 0m to 3932m.


Climate
Rize enjoys and experiences a mild climate with sunny summers mild winters. As a result of this ideal type of climate Rize enjoys plentiful and prosperous natural vegetation.
Economical Status
The basic economical structure of Rize rests upon the processing and sea shipping of tea. Rize is well known for its Tea Research Institute, which was originally established in 1958. Rize greets you with miles of tea plantation. Throughout the year, Rize produces about one million raw tones of tea. Fishing is the second main occupation of the people of Rize.


History
Formerly Rize was known by the name of Rhizaeum during the reign of Procopius, Peri Ton Polemon, VIII and II. In 1923 the major Christian population of Rize left the town to settle down elsewhere. Irrespective of its size, Rize holds a significant position as the major tea producing, processing and packing center in Turkey.

Around 370,000 inhabitants have made this significant town of Turkey their domain. Most of the people of Rize are adventurous and they are tremendously enthusiastic about sea-based
activities.
If you want to reach Trabzon (70 km west) and Erzurum (300 km south) you have to travel by road from Rize. Moreover, you can reach Istanbul from Rize by ship. The city is wonderfully situated at the heart of the tea plantations covering the whole mountainous region. If you stand at the Ziraat Park of the city you will surely be fascinated to have a picturesque view of the stupendous natural beauty and exuberance of the entire region. The summer tea festival of Rize surely gives an opportunity to taste the best blend of tea and the rare and famous Anzer honey usually obtained from the mountainous regions of the land. One of the things you should never forget in Rize is to purchase light summer garments known by the name of city “Rize-Bezi”. You will also get to have a glimpse of the 16th Century Islam Pasha Mosque and the wild remains of the Genoese Castle. Rize is one of the favorite camping grounds for tourists by the side of the lovely Alpine Lake amidst enchanting mountains and meadows. The trekkers heading towards the Kackar Mountain start their journey from the little town of Camlihemsin However, if you desire to spend most of your time in the lap of the nature then your journey should obviously include Firtina Vadisi, the Storm Valley with its fine-looking castle and Zirkale and the bridges of Byzantine Empire.
Ecological Features
Rize remains green in every season, as it is the major and most significant producer of tea in the whole of Turkey. Other than tea, Rize is also notable for the growth of a wide variety of citrus fruits. Recently, the tropical kiwi and avocado plantations have also been given very fruitful and positive results.
Surrounded with a rich natural texture, Rize offers many attractions for visitors.

The Andon mineral water spring is located 20 km from Rize and is a center of attraction and interest for the local inhabitants of the town. The waters of these mineral springs are monochrome, scentless and absolutely clear and pure. In addition to this the mineral spring waters of Ikizdere – Simsirli mineral water and Cayirli Mineral water are believed to have the clinical powers.
Waterfalls
The Agaran Waterfall is the only waterfall in Rize, which is fantastically located on the Sairler creek flowing through Cayeli District. There is no doubt about the fact that the Agaran Waterfall is really a stupendous natural wonder.
Highlands
The main highland plateaus of Rize are located at the edge of the Kackar Chain Mountains, at the Camlihemsin Hemsin and Ikizdere Districts. These highlands are special tourism centers where you are sure to enjoy the pleasure of dwelling beyond the clouds.
Preserved Areas
The Kackar Mountain National Park is one of the major and most significant preserved areas in Rize.

The Eastern Black Sea Mountains have been considered as one of the major ornithology areas of Rize.

In the Ataturk Museum in Rize you get to see some of the individual and private belongings of Ataturk. In association with this, certain ethnographic works excavated from several places of the town are prestigiously exhibited in the Mehmet Mataraci Mansion.
